What is PicoWay®?

PicoWay® is a picosecond laser system made by Candela and designed to treat tattoo pigment with extremely short pulses of laser energy. In simple terms, it breaks tattoo ink into very small particles so the body can gradually clear them over time.

For clients, that means a tattoo removal platform that can be used for complete removal, fading for a cleaner cover-up, and certain cosmetic tattoo treatments such as eyebrow PMU removal.

Not all tattoo removal lasers are the same. The system affects how different ink colors respond and how precisely settings can be tailored to different tattoos and skin types.

How it works

Picosecond pulses, chosen wavelengths.

PicoWay delivers energy in ultra-short picosecond pulses, with wavelength and treatment settings selected based on the tattoo pigment and your skin type. Treatment is not risk-free, which is why every plan is individual.

Picosecond pulses

Pulses measured in trillionths of a second break pigment into smaller particles.

Multiple wavelengths

Different ink colors absorb different wavelengths, so the wavelength is matched to the colors in your tattoo.

Individualized settings

Settings are adjusted for ink density, depth, placement and skin type, and revisited as the tattoo fades.

Zimmer Cryo cooling

Cold air cooling during treatment helps keep sessions manageable.

Candela PicoWay laser

Black and colored ink.

Tattoo removal is not just about black ink. The colors in your tattoo shape the plan.

Black ink

Black ink often responds very well to laser treatment, from fine line to dense packing.

Colored ink

Reds, greens, blues and other shades can respond differently, which is why planning matters for colored work.

Cosmetic pigment

Eyebrow PMU and microblading pigments behave differently from body ink and need careful evaluation.

Planning your treatment.

Different tattoos respond differently depending on color, density, age, depth, placement, and skin type. We plan around all of them, and adjust as your tattoo fades.

Treatments are typically spaced about 8 to 10 weeks apart, with longer intervals sometimes recommended later in the removal process. Your body does most of the work between visits.

How to choose the right technology

If you are comparing tattoo removal options, ask what laser the clinic uses, whether they regularly treat both black and colored tattoos, whether they treat cosmetic tattoos like eyebrow PMU, and whether tattoo removal is a major part of what they do.

It is also smart to ask whether the provider customizes treatment by skin type and tattoo characteristics, whether they can explain realistic expectations, and whether they can show real before-and-after progress from their own practice.

PicoWay® FAQs.

Is PicoWay® a good tattoo removal laser?

PicoWay is a picosecond platform built for tattoo and pigment treatment, and it is well regarded for that work. The laser is only part of it, though. Planning, settings and experience matter just as much.

Can PicoWay® remove colored tattoos?

PicoWay can treat black ink and many colored inks. Some colors respond more readily than others, so colored work is planned carefully.

Is PicoWay® good for fading tattoos for a cover-up?

Yes. Many people choose PicoWay not for complete removal, but to strategically fade an existing tattoo so a cover-up artist can work more cleanly.

Does PicoWay® mean fewer sessions?

Not automatically. The number of sessions depends on the tattoo: size, colors, density, age, placement, and how your body clears ink. We give you a realistic range after your consultation.

Should I choose a clinic based only on the laser?

No. The technology matters, but the experience of the provider matters too. The best choice is a clinic with strong technology, thoughtful treatment planning, and real experience in tattoo removal.

How do I know if PicoWay® is right for me?

The best next step is a consultation. Your tattoo’s colors, size, age, location, layering, and your skin type all help determine the right treatment approach.
